Theodore Yach: Through the shark zone for charity

Renowned ultra swimmer, Theodore Yach, is set for one of his most dangerous, icy Atlantic Ocean challenges yet to raise funds for disadvantaged swimmers – 35km from Hout Bay to Robben Island through great white shark territory.

Yach, one of SA’s most accomplished long distances swimmers will wear only a Speedo costume, cap and goggles as he attempts to become the first swimmer to tackle this hazardous route which passes a seal colony on Duiker Island on the northern edge of Hout Bay, Cape Town, at the end of November.

Seals are the primary food source for great white sharks in these waters. Yach’s support boats will carry Shark Shield repellant devices.

Yach, 52, will also be totally exposed to the notoriously cold Atlantic where temperatures vary from 10C to 16C during November.

Yach, a brand ambassador for multi-nutrient Marcus Rohrer Spirulina, is using the swim to raise funds for the Cadiz Open Water Swimming Development Trust which promotes swimming at grassroots and supports disadvantaged swimmers. He is calling for donations of R100 per stroke for as many of the 34 000 strokes expected to complete this challenge. He will also highlight Cape Town’s shark awareness campaign which promotes respect for sharks and responsible use of the ocean.

Please pledge now by clicking on the red button on the top right of this text box.

* Yach will be ready for the ultra swim from November 20 and will take to the water as soon as conditions are favourable after that date.
