Drakensberg Hiker is a self-owned business established to guide visitors who want to hike, trek or backpack in the Northern, Central and Southern Drakensberg.

The owner, Ian Shooter was born in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and - in joining the Boy Scouts at the age of 11 - started a life-long fascination with and exploration of the Drakensberg mountains. He offers his considerable knowledge and love of the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg to anyone keeen to explore it. After completing his national service, Ian studied and worked as a paramedic before moving on to study horse mastership.

After moving to Canada, where he ran his own equestrian centre, Ian spent a great deal of time hiking, skiing and ice-climbing in the Canadian Rockies. After 10 years in Canada, he returned to his roots to continue his life in South Africa.

When not hiking in the Drakensberg, he spends his time mountain biking, trail running and canoeing (kayaking).

Apart from the time spent in Canada, Ian has spent his entire life in KwaZulu Natal and is very knowledgeable about local fauna, flora and history.
