Bridal bouquet in soft pastels

One of the questions that I often get asked by people, is 'What flowers will work for my summer wedding?'.  And it sure is something that the potential bride should think about.  I mean, the last thing that you want is for your flowers to be droopy and wilted on your special day!
When choosing flowers for your summer wedding, opt for flowers that won’t easily wilt.  The higher the temperature, the more upkeep they will require. Look for ones with a waxy texture. Tropical flowers, such as orchids (try cymbidium and dendrobium orchids), are a great option. Heliconias, Strilitzias, tiger lilies (Umbelatums), and even roses (just make sure that these are fresh!) will tolerate high temperatures too. Buying local flowers is another way to go; blooms that are in season will more likely survive a long day in a bouquet or arrangement. Ask your florist which flowers will work best for your venue.
Have your florist deliver the flowers on the day of the wedding. Also, be mindful of your flowers during photography sessions. When your photographer isn't taking pictures with your bouquet in it, have a friend or bridesmaid hold your bouquet in a shady spot, or place it in a vase of cool water. If your blooms will be exposed to the summer heat for an extended period, it might be a good idea to keep a spray water bottle on hand and give your flowers a light spray every once in a while.
Summer brides - beware of oversized bouquets (Size doesn't always matter...)!  A smaller, hand-tied bouquet will last better in the heat than a full, cascading one. With the growing popularity of the beach and garden themes, brides wanting a more rustic and natural look for their bouquet add elements such as shells, feathers, berries and pinecones.
For the colour of your flowers, check out which flowers will be in bloom around your ceremony and reception area, and consider bold versions of those shades. For an outdoor or semi-formal wedding, think violet, hot fuchsia, mango, magenta, and green. Deeper shades are appropriate for formal weddings, like dark red roses or deep purple Lisianthus. When it comes to casual weddings, sunflowers or Gerberas are a great option since you only need a few to create a vibrant pop of colour.  All things being said about the colours, however, whites, creams and pastel colours still outrank the other colour choices!
You have an array of summer centrepiece ideas to choose from!  If you are having a formal ballroom wedding, go for tall vases overflowing with a mix of bold and deep-hued flowers, accented with feathers or gems. To create a modern vibe, display monochromatic green, orange, or even yellow blooms in clear containers. For an outdoor wedding, consider wooden containers filled with colourful, locally grown flowers or fynbos.  During the cocktail hour or in the pre-drinks area, daisies in simple jam jars will perk up the space. Or look into potted centrepieces so guests can take them home as favours.
Have a blessed wedding!
