Green Office Week gains Momentum!
Following on the information campaign launched three weeks ago, Green Office Week is pleased to announce that Professor Mervyn King has accepted to be the Green Office Week's Goodwill Ambassador.
Says King: "Today, there is a direct link between a company's performance, its impact on the environment and society. It's time that companies bring to the attention of all their staff the urgent need to engage in sustainable behaviour. Becoming eco-friendly is neither difficult nor expensive. On the contrary! I look forward to the day when more and more people take care of our planet in their households as well as their workplace."
Organisers of the week (19-23 April), Dictum Publishers, have made every effort to communicate this initiative to as many companies as possible, by making contacting them in various way; and the media being a key support agent. Says Ana-Maria Valente, a director of Dictum: "The media are the most powerful allies in an initiative of this nature: the success of spreading the news to as many working people as possible is hugely dependent on the media's buy-in and goodwill; and we are very grateful for their support in assisting us take this initiative far and wide and encourage as many working South Africans as possible to get involved and create environment-friendlier workplaces."
Says Valente: "On our website www.greenofficeweek.co.za we have posted as much information as possible in terms of "why, what and how!" It's critical to provide ideas and tools with which to start or review your organisation's environment policies. We have provided a sample Green Office Action Plan to ensure that people have a place from where to start". By Following Twitter GOW_SA you can get daily information feeds."
Information on how to save energy in the office environment can be found by going onto the Eskom website www.eskom.co.za/dsm. Eskom's Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM) department plays an important role in promoting energy efficiency by advising customers how to save energy by way of informative advertorials, partnerships with relevant industry bodies, and by providing an advisory service. Financial support and incentives are also part of EEDSM's offering.
With the local commercial property sector currently consuming up to 11% of Eskom's energy output, commercial properties can contribute towards ensuring a reliable supply of energy while protecting themselves against rising costs by reducing their energy consumption.
More technical information on energy efficiency opportunities for commercial properties can be attained by contacting the Eskom Contact Centre on 08600 ESKOM (08600 37566) and logging a query for an energy advisor to contact you.
