Town and University team up to welcome the world to South Africa
Greater Stellenbosch is an exciting World Cup initiative by the Stellenbosch Municipality and the University of Stellenbosch. It is a project that showcases the town as a prime destination for visiting tourists and teams during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. In anticipation of this incredible sporting event, the Greater Stellenbosch website was launched on the 13 November 2009.
The website is a virtual gateway to the new project, and offers a wealth of tourism information for visitors and sporting professionals to the town. The website - an extension of the initiative - presents Stellenbosch as a world-class destination in South Africa.
After years of preparation, South Africa is almost ready to welcome the million-plus expected visitors to its shores. Find out more about the Stellenbosch 2010 project from the recently launched website.
The purpose of the Greater Stellenbosch project
The Greater Stellenbosch project aims to bring international awareness to the excellent sporting facilities at the University of Stellenbosch, as well as to the town's superb hospitality resources.
"Stellenbosch is the second-oldest colonial settlement in South Africa and is a world-renowned tourist destination, well equipped and highly experienced in catering to the needs of guests," says Alderman Patrick Swartz, Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch.
Prof H Russel Botman, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University, adds, "We hope that, long after the last whistle of the 2010 tournament is blown, our town and university will be remembered for welcoming teams and visitors from across the world."
What the Greater Stellenbosch project has to offer fans and teams
Stellenbosch is a university district located a short drive from Cape Town, one of the major hosting cities for the 2010 World Cup tournament. The excellent road and transport networks make the forty-minute drive to Cape Town quick and effortless. This ensures that teams training at the facilities in Stellenbosch, and fans accommodated in the town, will have easy access to the city and the impressive Green Point Stadium.
The University has first-rate sporting facilities located at the Danie Craven Sports Campus. These include indoor and outdoor training grounds, a fully-equipped gymnasium, recovery centre, sports medicine unit and the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI). The campus is used regularly to host international sports teams during major competitions in Cape Town.
A range of standard to luxury accommodation will be available at guest houses, hotels and lodges in the area for up to 3,000 football fans, and there will be an additional to 3,000 beds available in university residence halls.
Choose Stellenbosch as your 2010 host town
The town of Stellenbosch aims to provide a scenic, football-focused environment for visiting teams and supporters in 2010. The abundance of accommodation, excellent sporting facilities and easy route to Cape Town - not to mention the reprieve from the crowds - makes Stellenbosch a sought-after location for experiencing the 2010 World Cup tournament.
