Cape Town Hot Spot: Greenmarket Square
By Jaco Jordaan, 01.03.10 | Comments
One of the city’s most vibrant craft & flea markets, Greenmarket Square is virtually unbeatable for gift and souvenir buying.
This cobbled square originally served as a forum for public announcements, including the 1834 declaration abolishing slavery. Today, the square is a vibrant open-air market, with vendors selling a wide selection of clothing, crafts, African jewellery, art, and fabrics. It is also home to many buskers as well as some of Cape Town's more colourful and eccentric characters. Bordered by restaurants and cafes, it is the perfect spot for alfresco dining while observing South Africa’s ‘rainbow nation’ in all its hues.
