Michael Owen joins Man Utd
In what must be the shock move of the season, if not the decade, former Liverpool hero Michael Owen has joined Manchester United.
“I had just begun to talk to other clubs when, out of the blue, Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon, and invited me to have breakfast with him the next morning,” said Owen. 48 hours later he had signed with the Old Trafford team.
The injury-plagued striker has signed a two-year deal with the option of a third year, after passing a stringent medical test. The breakdown of Owen’s salary is unclear, but it is believed that the player will receive a relatively low basic wage (by United’s standards), but will have massive bonuses and incentives, and will work largely on a ‘get-paid-as-to-how-you-play’ program.
Owen has often had his doubters and critics, but at www.premleaguefootball.blogspot.com we believe he is still one of the best natural finishers of the game; give him half a chance in front of goal and he’ll take it.
After being overlooked by England manager, Fabio Capello, this could be an ideal chance for the 29-year-old to resurrect his International Career.
His move will undoubtedly raise the eyebrows of fans from both Anfield and Old Trafford, but I don’t think anyone could begrudge him making the (potentially) career-saving move.
There will be a lot of talk in the media, and in the terraces, but we will have to wait and see what Owen has to say on the pitch.
