Should I Repair my TV or Buy a New One?

By Dave Tucker, 12.10.11 | Comments

What do you do when your television stops working properly but its warranty is expired – will you have it repaired or will you replace with a new model? While it is very appealing to go out and purchase a newer, bigger, flashier model, the cost of doing so may convince you to have your current TV repaired instead. Display problems are usually the most common issue which sees the display either becoming discoloured or the colours burn out. While your average television should offer around 40 000 viewing hours (or 20 years for the average viewer), there is the risk that it malfunctions before this. Purchasing your television and choosing an extended warranty option could save you money in the long run. We take a look at reasons why you should repair you current television rather than replace it.

  • Pricing is of course the most important factor. After all purchasing a new LCD or Plasma screen television is likely to cost far more than taking it in to a business that does TV repairs Cape Town. If there is only a minor fault in the television then repairing it will be a lot cheaper than buying a new one, and it could well go on to live up to its projected 40 000 hours lifespan. To find out exactly what is wrong with your television you will need to contact the manufacturer’s service centre and will probably have to take it to them so that they can run diagnostics tests. Once you know what is wrong with the system you can decide whether to have it repaired or replaced.
  • While you may decide that you want a new television regardless of whether or not your current one can be fixed, there is a market for working second hand televisions. By having your current television repaired you can sell it and then use the money for this as a contribution to your new purchase.
  • If you are environmentally conscious then you are probably aware of the heavy metals and chemicals that are used in the various components. If you throw your television set out then you risk these leaking out and damaging the environment. Having your set repaired means that you avoid this risk.

When it comes to deciding whether to fork out the cash for a new television or contacting companies that offer TV repairs and services and getting your current set replaced, the decision is up to you. If the repairs cost more than 70% of a new television then it is advisable to spend your money on a new one, but if the costs are around 50% of a new set then you will need to decide whether it is better to repair or replace your set.
