Camp Jabulani Launches the ‘Weeping-Boer-Bean Tree Project’ and Recycles Elephan

By The P.R Team , 01.08.11 | Comments
The award-winning, 5-star luxury safari lodge Camp Jabulani, Limpopo, a proud member of the Relais & Châteaux Association, is proud to launch two new sustainable projects, the ‘Weeping-Boer-Bean Tree’ and the ‘Sharing is Caring’ projects, in a bid to further the Camp’s eco initiatives and sustainability practices.

The Weeping Boer-Bean can be bought in a ‘grow-it yourself kit’ which is available at the Camp’s sister property, the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. The kit contains one elephant dung ball with potting soil in the centre, which is needed to plant the bean along with some water. All the directions and information on the tree is included in an envelope in an easy to follow guide.

The dung project, ‘Sharing is Caring’ recycles the elephant dung gathered from Camp Jabulani and is sold as a ‘soil amendment’ at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Visitors at the Centre can purchase this unusual souvenir that can fertilise garden plants for just R30 per bag. The funds raised will contribute toward the anti-poaching rhino patrols in the area.

The elephant dung/manure, contains rich plant material and improves the soil structure so that it holds more nutrients and water and becomes more fertile. Animal manure also encourages soil microbial activity which promotes the soil's trace mineral supply, which improves plant nutrition. It also contains some nitrogen and other nutrients which assist with the growth of plants.
