Pick A Central Hotel In Johannesburg

By Sihle Hangana, 28.06.11 | Comments
If you’re flying to South Africa’s City of Gold for business or pleasure choose a hotel in Johannesburg that suits your style and budget. Two stalwarts in the accommodation stable are the Southern Sun Katherine Street Sandton and Southern Sun Grayston Sandton.

These hotels in Johannesburg are some of the easiest to find from OR Tambo International Airport if you’re driving. Of course if you’re catching this city’s answer to rapid rail transport, the Gautrain, to the suburb of Sandton, it’s even better.

Both hotels in Johannesburg are well appointed with all essential amenities, and close enough to Sandton City and its surrounding entertainment venues to feel part of the hot-and-happening scene. Nelson Mandela Square has a great vibe with its open-air courtyard restaurants (complete with blankets and heaters in winter), live music, theatre and shops.

The adjacent Sandton City is a major drawcard with its upmarket, trendy boutiques dotted among traditional anchor tenants, and there’s also the elegant Athol Square, described as an urban oasis for shoppers. The Sandton Convention Centre is only five minutes away.

If you want to explore further afield from these hotels in Johannesburg, the Montecasino Gaming & Entertainment Complex is 15km away. Live shows are presented there and of course you can try and win your holiday expenses back if you’re up for some responsible gambling. The complex is in the suburb of Fourways and has been voted Best Casino, Best Entertainment Complex, Best Cinema Complex and Best Place to Take Out-of-towners.

Ellis Park, the first black-owned rugby stadium in South Africa, is also 15 kilometres away. It will always be remembered for its hosting of the momentous final fixture of the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

The Southern Sun Grayston Sandton is one of the hotels in Johannesburg that incorporates conferencing and banqueting facilities while the nearby Sandton Spa caters for those who want to do nothing more than unwind.A visit to the Cradle of Humankind and Maropeng Visitor Centre is recommended. It’s a World Heritage Site situated 50 kilometres outside Johannesburg and the location of major fossil sites and a nature reserve. The area comprises over 47 000 hectares of privately owned land in the north-western corner of Gauteng.

There are fabulous activities on offer there including the Magalies Meander, hot-air ballooning, wandering through the Sterkfontein Caves, and getting into the interactive experience provided by the Maropeng Visitor Centre.
