Intellect: the secret to anti-ageing

By Linestha , 24.06.11 | Comments
Swami Parthasarathy, at 84 years young, is acclaimed as the greatest living exponent of Vedanta, an ancient philosophy of India. He will visit South Africa this August to conduct a series of lectures at university campuses in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

The focal point of his discourses is the distinction between intellect and intelligence. Parthasarathy says emphatically, “Knowledge and intelligence acquired by humans can at best improve the standard of living. However they lack the ability to handle life’s challenges and function with efficiency and equanimity. Thus the world is replete with intelligent and knowledgeable personalities who have succumbed to the incessant demands of the mind.”

Vedanta presents the eternal principles of life and equips one with the strength of intellect to combine both dynamic action and peace of mind. It is this formula that keeps the Swami youthful and cheerful.

Living a life of service and sacrifice, Swamiji, as he is affectionately known, has travelled tirelessly around the world imparting the philosophy of Vedanta for over forty-five years. Swamiji cuts a contemporary yet statuesque image at 84 years old. Agile and ageless, his daily routine entails rising early at 4:00am each morning, at which time he begins writing. Each of his ten books have been authored in these early hours of the morning when clarity of thought is at its peak.

From 6am Swamiji engages in exercises, consisting of yoga, jogging, and regular games of cricket – one of his favourite past times and exceptional talents. The rest of the day is spent conducting lectures at the Vedanta Academy which he founded in 1988. The Academy offers a three-year residential course for students from around the world. Neither the students nor Swamiji break for weekends or vacations, demonstrating the sustainability of intense work, when undertaken in the right spirit. Furthermore Swamiji’s corporate and public lecture engagements span over six continents every year.

The life of Swami Parthasarathy reminds one of the sentiments bestowed upon Shakespeare for his timeless contribution to humanity. “He was not of an age but for all time’.

Swami Parthasarathy and his daughter-disciple Sunandaji will conduct a series of lectures titled ‘Ancient Wisdom, Modern Times’ in South Africa.
