LED Bulbs – The Future of Light?

By Sustainable , 13.06.11 | Comments

Are LED light bulbs the answer to tomorrows lighting conundrums? Experts are undecided and consumers doubly so. As you browse the stock of bulbs at your local hardware store, the amount of options that are available for consumption are insane indeed. Consumers want bulbs that can be dimmed, bulbs that are powerful, bulbs that last a long time and bulbs that give off a ‘warm’ appearance. These are a lot of standards which the bulbs have to meet and CFL bulbs are looking to be unable to deliver on these fronts. LED lights tick all of the right boxes as it were.

These ambient LED lights are priced at close to R330 and are therefore not an impulse buy, but once installed it is plain to see how this can become the future of home-lighting. While CFL’s may be dropping in price, their inability to please the base needs of the home consumer is hard to look past. Biggest drawback – they contain mercury and are therefore unsafe for normal disposal and must be placed in special containers before dumping them. Also, consumers are not in love with the off-blue/green glow.

LED lights - the same ones which would glow underwater in your spa bath powered by solar water heating; they draw roughly 10v-15v in comparison to the 60v which standard incandescent lights draw.  While CFL lights may be the better deal in comparison to price, LED light bulbs are the customizable king and for the home which requires the correct lighting options, there is simply no better option. LED lights burn longer; they burn brighter and in case they are destroyed, will not release any harmful gas into the atmosphere. Go over your options at an online store and decide if LED lights are for you and the needs of your household.
