Military Weapons Sneak By Shipping Agents

By Steven Noris, 28.03.11 | Comments

Absolute transparency is the name of the game when it comes to the hectic world of the shipping agent and when a port in Kenya is not informed regarding a shipping of military weapons, this world can be thrown into disarray. At the great port of Mombasa, the expected date of a Kenyan arms cache is still unknown to the port authorities. The shipping agents of the vessel have remained anonymous to the port authorities and the details of the vessel itself remain shrouded in the sort of mysteries which are best suited to a detective novel!

On all occasions, shipping agents have to submit details to the port authority a full fourteen days before the vessel docks. There are some insights into the name of the vessel though and a Maersk Costellation ship has been attached to this mystery. The ghost ship was detained at the port of Lobito when Angola questioned its legitimacy. It was released from Angola but was not seen in Kenya on its expected date of arrival. A spokesperson for Maersk, who usually deals with shipping agents Durban and other ports in South Africa had no comment on their vessel.

According to the ships manifesto, it stated that it was carrying a supply of soy for a prominent South African organisation who operate from a city in western Angola – yet when the soy was routinely searched through an eye-popping amount of rockets, ammunition and various other destructive weaponry was found hidden in the soy. The MD of Maersk was forced to comment at this point and placed the blame on a sister company in the US who are in no way affiliated with their daily business activities. As an example, if a sea freight Durban bound vessel was to be caught with weaponry, their owners would be submitted to the harshest of fines, as well as possible jail time. The military weapons mystery will be solved within the coming weeks, according to the port authorities.
