Hiking is a great way to explore everything South Africa has to offer, without breaking the bank (or a leg).
Hiking allows you to spend time with your family and friends while getting exercise and enjoying spectacular views of some of the country’s most superb destinations.
The Otter Hiking Trail at Storm's River Mouth near Plettenberg Bay takes place over 5 days and stretches over a distance of 41 kilometres. While it is not that far, the terrain is quite steep and it is recommended that hikers should be relatively fit before they attempt this hiking trail. However, the Otter will reward its hikers with some of the most spectacular views of the Tsitsikamma National Park, Nature's Valley and the Bloukrans River.
Another popular hiking trail is the De Hoop Whale Hiking Trail near Bredasdorp in the Overberg. The hike, which hikers deem easy to moderate, is also completed over 5 days and extends over 54 kilometres. Along the way hikers will be able to marvel at the indigenous plants, bird species and of course the whales! Lucky hikers will also come across some small antelope species.
The Amatola Hiking Trail in the Eastern Cape, about 22 kilometres from King Williams Town is also a favourite amongst nature lovers. The hike stretches over a distance of 100 kilometres and is completed over 6 days. Hikers will be amazed by the different faces of the mountains, streams, waterfalls and fynbos.
If you are looking for breathtaking views, you should definitely consider hiking in the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal. Depending on your fitness level and personal preferences there are numerous hiking trails available in the area and you will without a doubt be rewarded for your hard work!
