White Water Rafting Or Canoeing?

The great South African climate and the country’s wonderful rivers (and coastline) make it the ideal venue for water sport like white water rafting or canoeing. Whether you want to tame the rapids of the Orange River or are preparing for next year’s Dusi Canoe Marathon, there is a white water rafting or canoeing activity which will be suited to your personal preferences.
White water rafting or canoeing are great activities if you would like to travel in South Africa, experience water sport first hand and admire the plant and birdlife for which the areas near the rivers are known.
White water rafting, a water sport where a rubber boat is used to navigate through different levels of rough water, will be suited to most adrenaline junkies. It is also a great activity for groups or adventure team building sessions.
If you are not an experienced white water rafter (you don’t have to be) make sure to follow safety precautions. Everyone should have a life-jacket and you should distribute the weight evenly to avoid tipping over. You could also opt for an arranged white water rafting or canoeing tour where you’ll be accompanied by a tour guide.
In some cases you will be able to take your luggage with you on a white water rafting trip – rafts are more suited to carry luggage than canoes. Just remember that it will probably get wet – pack accordingly.
Canoeing is more suited to people who are looking for a competitive sport. Numerous canoe sporting events take place over the course of the year – you are bound to find a sprint, marathon or slalom event in your area to enter.
In the end it doesn’t really matter if you choose white water rafting or canoeing – as long as you enjoy the experience!
