Listening to Your Unborn Baby

By Crystal Heatley, 12.01.11 | Comments

Pregnancy can be the most exciting, happy and joyous period in a women’s life. One of first magical moments of pregnancy is hearing your unborn baby’s heartbeat for the first time. It’s the moment that confirms all those home pregnancy tests that you just had to take, just to make sure the last one was not a false reading. The moment your pregnancy becomes a reality and you know for sure that in about 7 months you will be holding that tiny baby that you made. For many women it’s a moment filled with tears of joy and one she will remember forever.

A baby’s heart will begin to beat at around 5 weeks and most women will hear it at their first gynae appointment at around 8 weeks of pregnancy. The 4 weeks between appointments can be agonisingly long, waiting for that next few seconds when you can see and hear your tiny baby again, just so you know everything is going well.  This anxiety is amplified even more if you are having or have had a pregnancy with complications.

But now moms can put there mind at rest by being able to monitor their baby’s heart beat in the comfort of their own homes using a special instrument called a Foetal Heart Rate Doppler. It is safe and easy to use and works well from about the 12th week of pregnancy.

The Doppler simply bounces sound wave off the baby’s heart to produce sound. It does not hurt or pose any risk the mom or her unborn baby.

Visiting with your gynae is usually a private affair, shared with a spouse/partner and sometimes a close family member such as mom or other children, so not many people get to share the magic of listening to baby’s heartbeat. We take home an ultrasound printed image and try to explain what it is to family and friends who smile and agree they can see exactly you are showing them. Most of the time they really have no idea what they are looking at.

Well now, with the foetal Doppler, we can share the unmistakable sound of baby’s heartbeat with anyone. And if you are not the type of person who easily shows off your bare belly, you have the added option of recording baby’s heartbeat straight to your PC and playing it for all to listen to at a later stage. You can even save it and play it back to baby after birth. The familiar sound is also soothing to your newborn.

Having your very own Foetal Doppler can reduce a lot of the stress that accompanies pregnancy, but more than that, it helps build the bond between mother and her unborn baby.  And now, with AngelTalk, they are readily available in South Africa at the affordable price of R450.00
