Make money Selling Photos Online

By Viantea, 21.11.10 | Comments

Selling Photos online is becoming a fast growing business around the world. Despite the increasingly awareness of photography, in Africa, selling Africa photos online still remain unexploited. Probably due to lack of awareness of the business or possibly due to lack of interest in the business. It is possible to really make pretty good money. However, this does not mean that you can sell any type of photos and make money. It is very important to understand what can sell and what cannot sell, as this is one of the key points that a photographer must understand before starting an online stock photography business. These two questions must be asked and answered before starting a stock photography business.

What will sell and will not sell?

Whether you are a professional ,amateur photographer, or just a digital artist or just have an interest in photography  who want to sell stock photos online, one of the first things that you must understand is what type of images are not in demand. If you are planning going around the town taking snaps of people, dogs in the streets and then sell them, you are surely wrong. Bear in mind that many buyers are looking for images that are commercially viable.

  • Listing Images of your friends and relatives on vacation or your pet will also not sell. It does not matter how clear or how beautiful your pictures are, for your pictures to sell, they must depict a concept. If they do not depict a concept they will not sell. In order to sell photos, your images should depict generic objects, a particular concept, or emotion.  Certain images of travel destinations can always find a buyer provided that the images capture the essence of the place or concept.

  • Images with too much or light digital noises will not sell. Images taken with poor quality digital cameras will also not sell. If you want to sell photography online, you must first invest in a good quality digital camera. When you are taking photos, remember that only well-lit, good quality and sharp images will sell.

  • Your photos should be nicely composed, clear, and free of digital noises. Most importantly, your images should be of high resolution. Over or under exposed photos will also not find any buyer. Images with heavy shadows are also rejected.

  • Be careful as Images with copyright issues will not sell. If you are serious about selling photos online, you must understand in detail about copyright laws. First, you cannot sell photos that have been taken by someone else. Only the person who has taken the photos have license of the images.

  • If someone has hired you to take photos, then that person has the copyright over the images.

  • Photos that include artworks or famous landmarks can have copyright issues. Art work is usually a copyright material. This means that you cannot sell a photo containing an image of an art work.

  • Images which are offensive, obscene, vulgar, or degrading often do not find any buyer. Therefore, avoid photos that can offend the sentiments of a reasonable person.

Once you are clearly aware of what sells and what does not, you will be able to sell photos online and make good money. To List purely Africa originated photos, I recommend you use Africa Photo shop. Unlike some other stock photography sites, registration and listing of photos, illustrations, vectors and more in Africa Photo shop are absolutely free. The shops also cater for sellers/photographers from Africa countries by sending their proceeds / commission to them via western Union.
