South Africa's first specialist Liability Insurance Broker

Liability Brokers is a young brokerage with youthful ideas. The idea of launching a purist liability brokerage was born out of the competition failing to specialize in one defined class of insurance business. Competing brokers have become jacks of many trades, broking risks right across the spectrum, ranging from motor vehicle insurance to professional indemnity to aviation liability – all done by one broker.

The legal landscape in South Africa has changed drastically in recent years and companies are being crippled by enormous law suits and years of draining legal expenses. The result is a lethal cocktail of attorney fees, loss adjustor costs and the ultimately the claim settlement. The prickly nature of South African law has called for specialized liability broking allowing the insured to trade freely and concentrate on their core business.

The Consumer Protection Bill of 2009 has enforced strict Product liability on suppliers. “Suppliers” are defined by the Bill as any business that markets goods and services. Previously product liability was limited to producers of goods. Under the new definition producers, importers, distributors and retailers are included and grouped all under the definition of “Suppliers” and will be liable for product liability claims. “Suppliers” can now be held liable for any damage caused by goods regardless of the fault being on the part of the actual manufacturer. Contrary to the previous law, no negligence needs to be proved. There just needs to be a causal link between harm, as defined by the Bill, and the defective product will result in a product liability case. The correct product liability insurance will be crucial in the present legal landscape.

Prior to launching Liability Brokers, Tyrone spent time in the London market place in the field of International Liability. Thereafter he returned to South Africa and worked 2 years in the Johannesburg office of an agent tribunalised by Lloyd’s of London. He was employed as a Liability Underwriter and had a binding authority on behalf of the London market. Other experience includes work at a A-rated South African insurer as a rating analyst. Tyrone holds a Bachelor of Business Science degree from the University of Cape Town.
